Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium?
The Government considers the Pupil Premium to be a key element of their education policy. Introduced in April 2011, the Pupil Premium provides additional funding to schools to target specific groups of children who are vulnerable to underachievement. These include pupils from low income families; children in care and the children of armed service personnel.
For the academic year 2024-2025, £1,480 has been allocated to schools for any pupil who has been registered for Free School Meals in the last six years. In addition, a Service Child Premium of £340 per pupil has been allocated to children with parents in the armed services in recognition for the particular challenges that they face. Children who are looked after or previously looked after receive £2,570.
Principles
We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils.
We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed.
In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged.
We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.
Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals. Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at one time
How is the Pupil Premium used at The Minster CE Primary School?
The Government has given schools discretion in how to best use the funding to meet the needs of their children.
The range of provision the Governors may consider include:
- Reducing class sizes thus improving opportunities for effective Assessment for Learning and accelerating progress
- Providing small group work with an experienced teacher focussed on overcoming gaps in learning
- 1 to 1 support
- additional teaching and learning opportunities provided through learning mentors, trained TAs or external agencies.
The school is delighted to have received a Pupil Premium Award of £1000 in recognition of its success in improving attainment and progress for disadvantaged pupils from 2011 - 2014.
